Starting college can be an exciting and transformative time for anyone. With new opportunities for growth, self-expression, and community, college can be a place where you truly come into your own. However, it can also present challenges for LGBTQIA+ students, especially when navigating spaces that may not always feel inclusive or supportive.
We’ve put together this checklist that can help you prepare for a successful and affirming college experience. From finding your community to creating a safe living space and embracing your own unique journey, this guide is designed to support you every step of the way. Whether you're stepping onto campus for the first time or returning for another year, these tips will empower you to thrive.
✅ Find Your Community
Finding your community is a great way to feel connected and supported on campus. Join LGBTQ+ student organizations to meet people who understand your journey. Attend events, clubs, or support groups to expand your circle and create a network of friends who share similar experiences and values. This may be your first time away from home, and you have the power to create your own community and chosen family with people who get you. Take the opportunity to explore and figure out the kinds of people you want to spend your time with.
✅ Schedule An Annual Wellness Visit
Scheduling a wellness visit, sometimes called an annual exam or a physical, is an important step in maintaining your health as a college student. Book an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your overall health and any specific concerns you might have. This is a great opportunity to talk about your sexual health and explore STI testing options, or you may want to talk to someone about your anxiety or depression. You can often access doctors at a student health center or you can meet virtually with one of our FOLX primary care providers in the comfort of your own space.
✅ Explore LGBTQ+ Resources
Explore the resources available to you as an LGBTQ+ student. Your college may have an LGBTQ+ resource center that can offer support, events, and counseling tailored to your needs. There may also be courses you can take or a gender studies or similar department on campus where you can find professors who can support you. The library is also a great resource and librarians can help you find what you need and also be a source of support. These resources can provide invaluable guidance and a sense of belonging as you navigate college life.
You can find a list of LGBTQ+ centers at universities here, or search your campus website. If your college doesn’t have a center, look around your neighboring city or town too.
✅ Create a Safe Space
Creating a safe and welcoming living space is important for your comfort and well-being. Personalize your room with affirming decor and items that reflect your identity. This is a great opportunity to express yourself and create your own cozy environment. Establish clear boundaries with roommates or housemates to ensure mutual respect and understanding. Your home should be a sanctuary where you feel safe, accepted, and free to be yourself.
✅ Seek Therapy for Extra Support
Therapy can provide valuable support as you navigate college life. You might want to talk to someone about living away from home for the first time, or maybe you're finding it hard to adjust to being more independent. Perhaps you have more stress taking college courses while you’re also working. Consider scheduling regular therapy sessions to explore your feelings and challenges in a safe and understanding environment.
Did you know that your insurance (or your parents insurance, if you’re still on it) maybe cover all or most of the cost of therapy? Even if you’re not in-network, you can request a “super bill” for reimbursement. If you’re looking for therapy, our FOLX therapists are not only in the community, but they're experienced in LGBTQ+ issues, and they can offer tailored support and insights.
✅ Block Time for Self-Care
Set aside time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation, whether it’s reading, painting, or spending time in nature. Explore mindfulness practices, meditation, or exercise to help manage stress and maintain mental clarity. Doing something mindful every day can really help your overall health and alleviate your stress. Consider taking care of yourself emotionally as important as getting your homework done! Our FOLX Community Platform features courses to help guide you like Building Resilience for Anxiety, Intro to Mindfulness, and Enhancing Sleep.
✅ Embrace Your Journey
Remember that your experience is yours alone, and it’s okay to navigate it at your own pace. If you’re not sure about your identity and you’re still exploring, that’s okay! You don’t have to have anything figured out. Be kind to yourself as you explore, and remember that you can always change how you identify, present, or share yourself with others. Celebrate your identity and achievements, whether big or small and recognize the strength and resilience that have brought you this far.
✅ Stay Informed and Engaged
Keep up with LGBTQ+ news and issues to stay connected and aware of developments that impact the community. Consider volunteering or advocating for LGBTQ+ causes that matter to you. Help organize an event on your campus or participate in a rally for something meaningful to you. These activities can be empowering and rewarding and are also a great way to meet other like-minded folks.
Some places to find LGBTQ+ news include:
✅ Know Your Rights
Educate yourself about LGBTQ+ rights and anti-discrimination policies at your college. Understanding these policies will empower you to stand up against discrimination and harassment, and it will equip you with the knowledge needed to take appropriate steps if any issues arise.
As you embark on this chapter of your college journey, remember that you have the power to shape your experience in ways that feel authentic and affirming to who you are. By staying connected to your community, prioritizing your well-being, and embracing your unique path, you can navigate college life with confidence and resilience. Trust yourself to make decisions that best support your growth and happiness. College is not just about academics; it's also about discovering who you are and building the life you want. You've got this!
