Back to school time for LGBTQ+ youth can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. LGBTQ+ youth may have some additional considerations as they perhaps enter a new school or are going to school for the first time with a new identity. Make sure you’re prepared to support them with the tips in the checklist below or hear from FOLX clinician Haley (she/her) as she shares 5 tips to help your kid feel loved and supported as they go to school.

✅ Talk About Feelings

Open conversations are the cornerstone of understanding and alleviating your child's anxieties or concerns about returning to school. (If they have any, they might also just be full of excitement and not at all nervous!) Sit down with your child and encourage them to share their feelings. This not only helps you understand their perspective but also strengthens your bond and shows your unwavering support. Remember, your child's emotional well-being is just as important as their academic success.

✅ Peer Support Groups

Finding a community where your child feels understood and accepted can make a significant difference. Look into LGBTQIA+ student organizations or support groups at your child's school. If there aren't any, a nearby LGBTQIA+ center might have a youth group. These groups provide a sense of belonging and an outlet to share experiences. Additionally, consider joining the Parenting Space in the FOLX Community Platform where you can connect with other parents, share advice, and gain insights on supporting your LGBTQIA+ child.

✅ Records and Forms

Ensure all necessary medical records and school forms are updated to reflect your child's chosen name and gender, if applicable. This might involve contacting the school's administration or health office. By keeping records current, you help prevent potential misgendering or deadnaming, which can be distressing for your child.

✅ Name and Pronouns

It’s essential that school staff use your child's correct name and pronouns. Reach out to teachers, counselors, and administrative staff to ensure they are aware of and respect your child's identity. This might also be a good time to educate staff on the importance of using correct names and pronouns to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. Depending on your kid's age, you might want to have a conversation with them before you reach out to the school on their behalf, so be mindful of that.

✅ Restroom and Locker Room Policies

Confirm that your child can use the restroom and locker room that aligns with their gender identity. If your child prefers or needs gender-neutral options, ensure these are available and accessible. Having these facilities readily available can significantly reduce anxiety and provide a safe space for your child.

️✅ Anti-Bullying Policies

Check that the school has clear anti-bullying policies that explicitly protect LGBTQIA+ students. You may want to work with the school or with your kid to develop a safety plan in case your child encounters bullying or harassment. Knowing that there are measures in place to protect them can give your child peace of mind.

✅ Books and Resources

Equip your child with books and resources that reflect and affirm their identity. The FOLX Library offers a curated list of book recommendations that can help your child feel seen and understood. Representation matters, and having access to these resources can bolster your child’s confidence and self-esteem.

✅ Mental Health Resources

Have contact information for counselors or mental health professionals who specialize in LGBTQIA+ issues readily available. Mental health support is vital, and having a trusted professional to turn to can make all the difference in your child's well-being, if anything comes up.

✅ Check-in

Plan regular check-ins with your child to discuss how they are feeling and to address any issues that arise. These conversations can help you stay informed about your child’s experiences and provide timely support when needed. Remember that kids of different ages will have different ways they want to connect. Doing an activity together, going on a walk, or having conversations on a drive can be some ways to check in with low pressure.

Preparing for a new school year involves more than just shopping for supplies; it’s about creating a safe and supportive environment for your child. By following this checklist, you can help ensure that your LGBTQIA+ child feels affirmed, protected, and ready to tackle the school year with confidence. Remember, you are your child's most important advocate, and your unwavering support will help them thrive both academically and personally.
