Holiday gatherings can sometimes bring up challenging and triggering conversations, especially for LGBTQIA+ folks. You might be worried that someone will ask you inappropriate questions about your identity, or you may not want to have conversations about the current political climate. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, here are some things you can say to handle and diffuse the conversation while protecting your mental health, from a FOLX therapist and a Crisis Text Line clinician.

Change the subject by saying something like…

“I’d rather not get into that right now. How about we talk about some of our favorite holiday memories? I love hearing
those stories!”

“I think we can all agree my dating life is complicated, but have you seen this sourdough I kneaded?”

Be direct and let the person know that their comment is not okay by saying something like…

“Can we focus on enjoying this time together instead of debating sensitive topics?”

“This topic makes me uncomfortable. Can we please move on to something else?”

"I know you don't mean to hurt me, but that comment is hurtful.”

Remember, you can always leave. Take the space you need by saying something like…

"I need a moment to myself to get some fresh air. I'll be back in a few!"
